Hydro-Québec

A founding Conexus member, Hydro-Québec is Canada’s largest power utility and a global technological leader. It operated the Gentilly-2 nuclear plant for nearly 30 years before its closure in 2012.

After briefly leaving our organization, Hydro-Québec rejoined in 2013 as a participant in the Information Exchange program. While no longer operating a nuclear plant, Hydro-Québec contributes to our knowledge management, safety culture, OPEX and continuous improvement. It operates a vast high-voltage transmission system, with the Québec government as its sole shareholder and is focused on advancing clean energy and supporting the transition to renewables and decarbonization.

Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO)

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is responsible for Canada’s plan for the safe, long-term management of used nuclear fuel. It joined our organization in 2017 as part of the Nuclear Safety & Environmental Affairs program.

Established in 2002 by Canada’s nuclear electricity producers, including Ontario Power Generation, New Brunswick Power and Hydro-Québec, the NWMO operates as a not-for-profit organization funded by these members and Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL).

The NWMO oversees the Adaptive Phased Management Plan, which involves isolating used fuel in a deep geological repository and selecting a site with informed, willing hosts. It collaborates with leading experts in nuclear waste management both nationally and internationally.
